THE MARKETER’S TRAVAIL

Random coupon-junk sounds like
one-armed bandit when dull thunk
of paper hits post box bottom.
Pokie bandits shoot for pot luck,
Mostly missing in between,
But now one in a million
Pays the lie! The spark breaks ennui
In this revolving dream.

Marketers have evolved
From random paper chase.
Tired of hit and miss,
Technology spurs them on.
Now data-grabbing webbots
Earn their keep, tell what’s
News, what to lose, what to win.
Crawl through the internet
To spy, select and store
The winning combination,
Segment the public even more.

The marketers dare to think
They can prevail by poaching
Data, exclusively surveilled.
To know your intention before you do,
To apply the tightening screw
By enticing you – their numbers have
Shown you to be what they say you are.
They have you fixed, corralled
Against your will, and soon homogeneity
Will spread their facile gaiety.

How inconvenient for them
That for some black is white,
While white is black to others,
Predictability fails.
The promise of life entails
The richest surprises waiting in the wings.
A small breath can bring about
A tsunami wave of change.

Ha Ha! fooled'em. I got off that merry-go-round a long time ago. However my Jeep is dying and Poppa needs a new truck. ;) :)
Yeah, buying a car when you know what you want and are willing to give people the 'no thanks, I am not playing that game' look can be entertaining at times... though, if I had the choice I'd forgo the experience

Another reason why those who can make us cry at times can also be the lone ones looking sane and happy at other times...
Three cheers for each person's uniqueness, whether it's crotchety as the loner who will only be themselves or smooth as a marketeer's slick line.

Buying a car can be interesting because most of us know the tricks and are forearmed. Being math people, my husband and I are the last ones they want to see coming in the door. Right now, the auto industry is in a mess, so there are deals to be had.
