I would like to start a thread in which we can all share our resources for (to be/new) parents. In this list we can include anything from books to articles, podcasts, songs, blogs, mantras and stories. Basically anything that has helped or inspired us in any given situation with our children.

But this list will also include resources for children. This is particularly helpful when one is deciding what to get for children.

I will keep updating this first post with all the recommendations so that the information is in one place and easily accessible. Naturally, this thread is a work in progress so if you have any suggestions that can help improve it, please share!

Blessings,
Goli

Love this idea, Golmona!

My favourite mantra/idea with big emotion kids was to recall that I would be very happy one day that they had such strong wills and big emotions since it would serve them well... so this latest outburst was a sort of 'good' thing with a long timeline. With that thought, I could much more easily move on and focus on how to help them get through to the other side in the moment.

I also loved "Raising your Spirited Child" by Mary Sheedy Kurchinka. There seems to be a newer edition out.
Later, I found "How to Talk so your Kids will Listen and Listen so your Kids will Talk" by Adele Faber invaluable... still refer to those concepts.
Another lifesaver for us was "Honey, I Wrecked the Kids" by Alyson Schafer. She is hilarious. You can check out some a brief video of her here: where she talks about 'the children's revolution' which she compares to the women's rights and civil rights movements of earlier generations. At 3:40/4:00 she begins her demo of one of her key concepts, the power struggle, complete with props:-D

Reading to kids I loved Jamberry and the Susan Boynton books, Dr. Seuss and Stephanie's Ponytail (as well as the other Robert Munsch books). Anything lyrical and sing-songy made me feel good reading and I figure that has to be good.

So true!! It's really important to remind ourselves that we much rather have kids with big emotions who aren't scared or ashamed of showing them, which also means they are more likely to work through them. Looking around, there aren't many adults who have a healthy relationship with or a good understanding of their emotions and feelings.

Also, when I notice am starting to get frustrated with my son, I take a step back and remind myself that it's he who is having a challenging time and that I shouldn't make it mine. That way I don't take on his emotions.

Suffice it to say, am learning every day ;)

Just to add a little humour to the discussion, another little quote (can't recall from where?):
Be kind to your children, for they shall be the ones choosing your nursing homeo_O:D
