Lights, Camera, Action – Welcome to Wakaliwood



In the Wakaliga slum on the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda, lives Nabwana IGG (Isaac Godfrey Geoffrey). A few years ago he started a movie company, Ramon Film Productions. Using local talent for actors, prop makers, and film production, he began to make short action movies. They are filled with mayhem, fake blood, and comedic special effects (on purpose).

It might be easy to dismiss these movies, but consider the people involved. They are the survivors of two of the most violent regimes in Africa. To have lived through those times was a miracle. The old adage goes “write what you know”, and they certainly have done that.

Mr. IGG says he and his group make these films because they like action movies, and no one else is making them in their country. They grew up watching bootleg copies...
