This bridge has taken 9 years to build (including 2 artificial islands and a hybrid bridge/tunnel system, and will open tomorrow, Wednesday 24th October. 67 million people live in the Greater Bay area, and this is going to significantly decrease access time getting into and out of Hong Kong.
In my humble opinion, the rest of the world should sit up and take notice, as this new infrastructure is like China just had a lung transplant. The bellows of its economy are going to start performing so much better and more easily. I wouldn't like to be in a traffic jam on this bridge though - it's 55 kms in the one direction, end to end. Apparently it has been built to withstand an 8 on the Richter scale, and typhoons, etc. The bridge was constructed of enough steel components to build 55 Eiffel towers. The existence of this bridge is going to cut the travel time from the southern Guangdong province (Zhuhai area) to Hong Kong from 3 hours to 30 minutes.
