Earth Hour first started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, back in 2007 — I was there and participated. Since that day, it's grown to engage more than 180 countries and territories around the world. Earth Hour 2018 is on the 24th of March 2018, at 8:30 pm local time; this means your time in your area, not a set time you have to work out based on another area.
So what is it? It's organised by WWF, which is the World Wide Fund for Nature (https://www.worldwildlife.org/). It's held once a year, encouraging individuals, businesses and communities to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour. It can be looked at as a symbol of commitment to the planet, so it's really about being a symbolic event — the idea and intention of trying to make a difference — not so much about the reduction of our ecological footprint. It does encourage us all to think about our impact on the health of the planet..
The event acts as a trigger to find alternative ways of energy sourcing which don't impact the environment negatively, as well as work out real solutions to other environmental challenges.
It's pretty easy for us to turn off what we don't need to use, and light a candle, or use a flashlight if we need to. We can read a book, go outside and star gaze, actually talk to people in person, plus so much more.
