On Wednesday India inaugurated the world's tallest statue, a towering bronze effigy of Sardar Vallabbhai Patel who played a leading role in the country's struggle for independence. At 182 meters (597ft), it cost more than US $400 million to construct. Patel was known as the "Iron Man of India" for integrating various states in the post-independence era. Interestingly, it was constructed on the island Sadhu Bet (originally called Varata Bawa Tekri) which was named after a local deity, a site of religious importance.
Back in 2014, 58% of the total population of India were living on less than US $3.10 per day. According to a recent report from the Brookings Institution, Nigeria overtook India in May this year to become the country with the world’s highest number of people living in extreme poverty. Data compiled by USAID, released in 2015, shows that India received US $65.1 billion in economic assistance from the US in inflation-adjusted dollars in the period 1946-2012.
Considering the cost of this statue, it sure is interesting to see the choices India makes with their spending.
