I was in my other favorite grocery store, Natural Grocers (in the US west of the Mississippi River) and saw this display in front of the egg case. It is a powerful education tool. Most chickens live in a cage that is about the size of an adult's two feet.
Labeling the living conditions of chickens is tricky in the US because there are no official definitions. You may see cage free, but that does not mean they have much more space. My picture shows the relative size of their environment - cage, cage-free, free-range, and pasture raised. There are other considerations about the chickens' environments, so you need to know about the source.
