My mother spoke of this event. We were in Tarawa, deep into the Pacific Ocean islands at the time. The Americans did not bother to tell anyone what was happening. Many of the Gilbertese were Seventh Day Adventists and thought the end of the world had come so they went down to the beach to meet the Lord. My mother said the light show was fantastic but truly terrifying and she was a scientist.
