I've ridden elevators in high-rise buildings enough to know to stay off of them in "rush hour". In really big buildings, you have to know which elevator bank to use to go different places. In the 150 years of passenger elevators, they remained much the same - going up and down in a dedicated shaft.

Well, hold on to your hats - a new era is dawning. The test units are located in Rottweil, Germany and a developer plans to use them in a building in Berlin that will be completed in 2019. There is a catch. As you can imagine, they will be very expensive, although they do use less square footage and energy than typical units.

After unveiling its Multi concept in 2014, German engineering conglomerate ThyssenKrupp has made its vision of a cable-free, Willy Wonka-style elevator design a reality. Over the past few years the company has been constructing a 246-m (807-ft) high test tower and refining the technology that would allow multiple cars to move vertically and horizontally in a single shaft using a magnet-based drive system similar to that in Maglev trains. Just last week, after two-and-a-half years of construction, the test tower and first fully functional Multi unit were launched. http://newatlas.com/cableless-vertical-horizontal-elevator-multi/50218/?li_source=LI&li_medium=default-widget
