Once upon a time, there was a man in Idaho (USA) who discovered a neighbor child was sleeping on the floor. He got some wood and built her a bed. Having wood left over, he asked around if anyone else needed one, and as they say, the rest is history.

Luke Mickelson, his family, and friends continued making beds, but the need was growing, and he reached a turning point in his life - scale back or quit his job and go forward. He chose the latter. Today there are chapters across the USA that provide beds for children in need. Part of the success is help from some corporations such as Lowe's (lumber, supplies, volunteers), Lucid (mattresses), and DeWalt (tools).

This interview explains the story very well.
