The pop-up world comes to construction. In big projects, lots of earth is moved, and it has to go somewhere, usually trucked far away. If you've ever been around any of those dump truck convoys, you know what a mess that can be.

Watershed Materials has developed a process that turns the excavation materials into bricks that can be used on site in the project. It is not a new process; the Navajos have been doing it for a long time.

The pop-up plant uses extremely high pressure to compress loose soil into the sustainable bricks, mimicking the geological process of lithification that takes millions of years in nature. The technology is currently being used on the Kirkham Project, an urban development comprising 445 housing units in San Francisco.
