Lava has reached the sea near to Krakatoa after an eruption. Tsunamis have since hit Indonesian beaches within the Sunda Strait, which is between the islands of Java and Sumatra, with the cause likely to be undersea landslides. Hundreds are reported hurt so far with many buildings damaged.

My first source was stuff.co.nz. Initially I quote them as saying, "The Disaster Mitigation Agency said the tsunami was possibly caused by landslides due to the eruption of Krakatoa and tidal waves due to the full moon." Ten minutes later, they removed reference to the full moon, and re-worded the sentence to being, "The possible cause of the tsunami was undersea landslides after the Krakatoa volcano erupted, the agency said." I thought that was interesting.

For those unaware, back in 1883 a series of eruptions occurred, sending ash clouds, and tsunamis, around the globe. More than a hundred and twenty thousand people are reported to have lost their lives as a result of the tsunamis. It's said the average global temperatures fell as much as 1.2 degrees Celsius in the year following the eruption and weather patterns continued to be chaotic for years after, with the temperatures returning to normal five years on.

What maybe wasn't clear back when this was posted was that the "son" or "child" of Krakatoa, Anak Krakatau, is the cinder cone island inside the main caldera of Krakatoa that had the volcanic eruption. It was birthed in that 1883 eruption. The mainly submerged caldera is 7km wide.

Krakatau, a small island group in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Sumatra and Java is one of the world's most famous volcanoes. It is a mostly submerged caldera with 3 outer islands belonging to the rim and a new cone, Anak Krakatau, that has been forming a new island since 1927 and remains highly active.
Krakatau exploded spectacularly in a devastating Plinian eruption 1883 that killed more than 30,000 people (mostly by the huge tsunamis triggered by the eruption). The eruption was one of the first global news events after telegraph lines had connected the different continents.
