Last weekend Pete Davidson from SNL (Saturday Night Live) made a crass joke about Dan Crenshaw, who was running for congress in Texas. Crenshaw is a retired Navy Seal who suffered injuries, including the loss of an eye, while serving in Afghanistan. (The point here is not about questionable wars, so lets leave that discussion aside.) Davidson said Crenshaw looked like a porno hitman.

Of course, the uproar was immediate, with many going down that tiresome route of calling for Davidson's ouster - basically more bloodshed. Everyone who could open their mouths and offer an opinion did so. The stupidity and hate abounded.

Crenshaw took a different tack. He said he did not want an apology, and that he felt we need to move away from this culture of blame and retribution. Basically, he shut down the pundits, talking heads, etc. What a blessed silence that was.

Crenshaw went on to win his seat by a wide margin. Then he made such a classy move - he appeared on SNL with Davidson where he "returned the favor" to Davidson. A clip from last night's show is linked below, and I was floored. Did I see a shift in consciousness on SNL of all places?

Reading more about Crenshaw, gives me great hope. His ideas about international relations and immigration are a light in the polarized wilderness that has taken over our political lives - perhaps a glimmer of hope?

BTW - Davidson's father lost his life on 9/11. Also, Davidson used to be Ariana Grande's boyfriend before she dumped him, and that is one of her songs on the ringtone.

I'm in the US and I could watch it. I think it would benefit us all to get away from division, hate, and name calling and bring more unity, acceptance, and friendship. The whole world desperately needs that.

Sorry it is not available outside the US. I don't watch SNL anymore because it rarely is funny - too many hostile jokes. I did not even know who Pete Davidson was before his "joke" made the news. I was not offended but did think it was careless. Dan Crenshaw did something extraordinary. He did not jump on the us versus them train. His appearance on the Weekend News segment was funny, and his closing remarks about civilians and military joining together on Veteran's day was heartfelt. The big cue about the segment came at the end. The "anchors" stood up, applauded and shook Crenshaw's hand. I could see it was not scripted and was an honest reaction.

Here is why the whole piece is important. It broke through the political division and showed people finding a common ground. When that happens, it will be easier to turn swords into ploughshares. My hat is off to all parties involved who decided to take a new path.

Thanks, Linda for the summary and knowing that I can watch it when I'm back in the country.

I agree but doubt it will be the start of a trend. I liken this bit of relief to the Christmas break in the fighting during the Great War. If Crenshaw had not been a veteran, this entirely staged rapprochement never would have happened.

I didn't see the original "offensive" remarks, but as you suggested, Linda, they they probably weren't that onerous. These days it is open season on white males for the most part (just look at all the shit Trump has to take, as compared with his predecessor), particularly by the MSM and coastie liberals in general, but if you're a veteran with an eye patch (or a person of color or LGBQT whatever), you are "safe" from such inconveniences.

What really disturbs me, however, is the way we bend over backwards to conscience-less order followers (cops and military). There are so many more worthy candidates for putting on a public pedestal.
