Breathtaking Photos of Mars From HiRise
HiRise has captured some amazing high resolution photos of the surface of Mars. Below are a collection of some of the more recent images that NASA has released, as well as a few older ones.
The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment, 'HiRise', is a camera sitting on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, a multipurpose spacecraft created to explore and observe Mars from orbit. HiRise was originally built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corporation, at a cost of around US $40 million, under the direction of the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory.
The camera has a 0.5 m (19.7 in) aperture reflecting telescope, the largest yet in any deep space mission. This enables it to take photos of Mars with resolutions of 0.3 m/pixel (around 1 foot). What this means is...
