Puckerstguy, Sinera, and I were discussing music offline and decided to see if the rest of you wanted to join in. One of the topics is "remakes of songs". I would like to present this one first.

One of my favorite artists from the 80's. Kate Bush:

Kate Bush - Cloudbusting

My favorite Canadian artist, Matthew Good:

Matthew Good Cloudbusting

He is such an activist. I can't believe he didn't do Army Dreamers. Love his version of Cloudbusting anyway.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole

Angel From Montgomery - Bonnie Rait

I remember when this one first came out because it was such a shock. It was foretelling, as he and his wife both passed on soon after.
Hurt - Johnny Cash

I love Kate Bush, especially that album it was from. I also always loved that video. Did not know this cover and it is really good. Like the stronger piano play focus on that one. Good voices too. Sometimes this guy sounds a bit like Michael Stipe, one of my favourite singers.

Just some more suggestions to all here who participate, which I also had done on our pm discussions since this thread was my idea:

If possible and okay please do it in a way that you also always post the originals, not just the covers, and vice versa. It is good especially for people that do not know the other version. And for a comparison discussion because this is what this thread was intended to be about (I wanted to call it 'Original vs. Cover song' to make this more clear).

Also One65 is it possible to embed the video instead of a link? (It's easy here, just paste the youtube-link, that's all.).

Also it would be cool to only post about one song (with two vids: original and cover). The reason is really that (as it is with the other thread) we really wanted to talk/discuss and appreciate the song(versions) and maybe 'argue' (a bit) which version is best or alternatively what we LIKE (positivity intended also here) about this and then that version. It is not that easy if we only post our list of fav songs without comparison in one post. So that's why. Thanks.

Now on topic: I love it when covers are genre-crossing/hopping/changing in a way. I have a lot of ideas for examples for that.

I'll start with a classic cover though. One of the or maybe THE most 're-defining' was certainly All Along The Watchtower from Dylan played by Hendrix.

Original:

Cover:

My take: I was not so familiar with Dylan's original version I admit as only now I heard it in full for the first time, so this is also about learning new (old) stuff for me. I like the harp solo and it has its' charm. But of course I'd root for the legendary Hendrix version any time.

So there goes my vote.

I post the original too as intended procedure for this thread.

I would have also suggested these two for certain. I like both versions and cannot decide which is better.

Yes, that is another surprise cover. It is hard to imagine anyone except Jimi performing it.

Interesting side bit of info - I saw him perform it - seats close to the stage. Even as a teenager, I knew he was not from here.

Perfect. I just stumbled upon a cover that made me laugh out loud and wanted to share it.

I love the juxtaposition of one music + cultural genre upon the other and all the little details thrown in. Great interplay between the two performers; they could have called it 'dueling cellos'. Tremendous performance!

2 cellos cover:

This cover is hard metal by AC/DC on cellos; costumes and all :)) They have actors in costume in the audience, too, to spice up the fun.
Also, I am guessing that the 2 cellists commissioned extra thick bowstrings for this and still they could have used new bows after only a few tens of seconds.

Original: (you may need to dial the volume down, lol)

Haha, yeah, this really also made me laugh.

Wonder what would have been the audience reaction if back then about 250 years ago they REALLY had done such a 'modern' performance in the concert hall. But who knows? We were not there then (well, at least not in this life or body).

Ok, I'll carry on just for myself. If s.o. wants to comment or even 'vote' which version is best I am of course happy.

Original

Cover

This is actually the opening song of the documentary film about their US tour from 1989 called 'Rattle & Hum' with an album of the same name.
The cover song was also as live version on the record as you hear it, never a studio version by U2 has been done, so this is really 'the cover' as it is on the record.

I always loved Bono's opening words on the footage for this concert: "This song Charles Manson stole from the Beatles. We're stealing it back."

My vote? I still opt for the original because to me it is the Beatles' one and only genuine almost-'metal' song. (Or at least 'hard rock').

I have lots of classics in store (even the remakes will be classics and 'oldies').

However now I will do something I found recently. Y'all know I am into Nordic (Norwegian mostly) Folk a lot.

I could never have imagined that there is an equally good or maybe even better version of Wardruna(feat. Aurora)'s song 'Helvegen'. I stand corrected. This cover version with 'normal' drums, guitars, organ and imv an even better vocal delivery than Aurora by the Kalandra singer completely blew me away when I discovered it not long ago. Can't stop listening to this shit! :-))

Original (although one could argue that it is already a cover too due to Aurora but it's still the original band):

Cover:

Okay, to do the great original justice it is actually undecided for me. Both are fantastic anyway.

What you think which is better?

A new one, just out yesterday. The HU covering Metallica. As blasphemic as it might be, I like the Mongolian version even more.
In the usual format for this thread. Original first, then the cover.

Seemann = Sailor / Mariner / Seaman

In this case I even like the cover version a bit more. Nina is a legend.

These two are not so totally different since they are not really genre-crossing (e.g. pop turned metal or rock turned reggae or whatever).
Some guitar luminary fans will surely take issue with my decision but I still opt for the original.

Hey Pucksterguy and One65, since we three started this thing are you still into this thread?
Anyways, I'll go on even on my own then.

Here's two times Simon & Garfunkel turned into heavy metal ballad. I like all four versions but admit I am more into the newer interpretations.

Yes, I know that strictly and nitpickingly speaking the S&G version is already a kind of cover of a traditional but we all connect it to S&G mostly.

Almost the same year for these performances: 1977 vs 1978. I like both 'crazy' versions and bands.

Original

Cover

The lyrics are not a direct translation but a completely different song ('I watch TV').

Background: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV-Glotzer

"TV-Glotzer" is a song by Nina Hagen Band, first released in 1978 by CBS Records and later, on August 29, 1979 released in United Kingdom. The song is a cover of "White Punks on Dope" by The Tubes, with different German lyrics from the perspective of an East German unable to leave her country, who escapes by watching West German television, where "everything is so colorful". Hagen wrote the song before being expatriated from East Germany in 1976, following her stepfather Wolf Biermann. Later, when she formed the Nina Hagen Band in the West Berlin, they recorded the song and it became the lead single from their debut album Nina Hagen Band (1978).
The single has sold over 100,000 copies in France.

By the way, the entire album which I recently purchased on vinyl as re-edition (and heard for the first time in full!) is musically excellent. Her band then split with her later on due to 'differences' (she is a difficult histrionic personality). She became Nina Hagen without the 'band' and they became the band "Spliff" (see the song from my post in this thread) which is til today imv one of the best German bands with their 4 albums from 1980-84, imho they are even better than the world-famous Rammstein or Kraftwerk. Unfortunately unlike the other two they never got fame internationally. Life is never fair.

Almost forgot about this thread, just like I assume Pucksterguy and One65 did too.

Now let's TALK TALK for a while about Remakes again, shall we? Great pun I know, more to follow. :fp

Two famous TT covers. Good ones, yet I still love the originals more in each case.

Btw, imv TT is one of the most underrated bands of the 80s and still remain one of my fav bands overall. Their unique sound, style and that unique voice of Mark Hollis (who left us in 2019) are unforgettable for me.

One of my favourite songs actually, and favourite music clip, too. Placebo also did a very good job in covering it including another good music clip video for it. Also note how the rhythmic hook from the low keys on the piano is played as a riff on the guitar (or is it synth?) instead.

I have No Doubt (yeah, as promised, the other pun) that this band did a good job with the remake, too. Interesting to hear the song differently with a female voice.

I had already 16 Horsepower being covered. Now it is about them to cover and they did some pretty good jobs with it. Four examples. The first remake is VERY touching imv, can move you to tears.

Original (a cover of an older song in itself, I know, anyway...):
