Oh - what a story. I have to thank Pod for a link to a news article about this adventure. As soon as I read it, I was off on a search for more info and found this book. (You can get it on Amazon or order it from the website.)

The book was published around the half-way mark of the voyage, so I checked the FB page, and yes, she made it all the way back home. I gave this book to 3 children (3-6 years old), and they were immediately enthralled. It is not a traditional story book. It has many photographs with descriptions and explanations about what was going on.

The human who went on the voyage (and author) was a young man from France, Guirec Soudee. He picked up Monique (the hen) at his first stop in the Canary Islands. People said a hen would not like sailing and would not lay eggs - wrong on both counts. In fact, she laid far more eggs than the average hen.

The FB page has interesting info about Guirec and Monique, and the website explains how they made the trip and the people who helped them.

I'll close with my favorite picture of Monique wearing her sweater in Greenland.

Incredible journey. Love the sweater, she knows how to pose for the camera.

We always knew Tenerife had magic. Now we know they have chickens!

I like chickens - especially the little clucking sound - very soothing.
They are quite funny, too. Although we carefully explain how to eat around chickens, someone always tests our advice. The results are hilarious to watch - one chicken running off with a sandwich and the others following close behind. Of course, the one who no longer has a sandwich is not laughing so much. Don't worry, if it a problem, we go to the food truck and fix up a hot dog for them.
