So that would put us about 1700BC. A submersible expedition to the dead sea found remnants of an old civilization which could match Sodom and Gomorrah, the time frame is about right. The Dead Sea is much saltier than the ocean, it's so salty that only a few species of bacteria live there. The saltiness might be related to the bible where it said people turned to salt (or something that looked like salt).

During last month's annual American Schools of Oriental Research meeting, Phillip J. Silvia presented a paper showcasing soil evidence and analysis that suggests a meteor was responsible for the destruction of both the land and all human settlements in the region nearly 3,700 years ago.
According to the paper, the archaeological data collected demonstrates a pattern for a high-heat, explosive event.
