This was the Garden of Eden in New York, it was designed and maintained by environmentalist and urban gardening pioneer, Adam Purple (bottom left). At the time it spanned 15,000-square-feet amid the ruins of the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Purple died in 2015; the New York times has an obituary here.

He sounded like a bit of a legend in the area where folks knew him and a role model when it came to urban gardens.

Does anyone here know of any great gardens locally to you, or elsewhere?

Thank you! Thank you for sharing this marvellous man's journey and the impact he has made, despite being just one lone soul on the way. Although hope is crushed by big pharma, and big business, the very existence of this garden if only for a short 11 years proves the tenacity of the spiritual will to exist and to challenge odds. The reverberations of his efforts obviously extend far past the physical life of the garden, as he dropped a seed of spiritual might into every soul who helped, or even did nothing more than tread the round paths. Life is so ready to live, if given the opportunity, and it does not equate to ownership or comfortable, middle-class values which have more to do with daubing layers of security over the potential of life, which can be very surprising in its expression.

As I sit here on 11th September and remember the destruction of the towers, I also now have a point of focus right there in Lower East Manhattan, which is a statement of its opposite.

After I just waxed lyrical about this man's achievement, the internet served up to me a different perspective on his life - a darker side. Perhaps the garden was his attempt to reconnect, after all.
