When I finished this article, my first thought was the scene in the movie, Lucy, where SJ morphs from a blonde to a brunette as she walks through the airport.

Thomas Cronin, a Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, is researching the effects of light receptors beyond the rod and cones in the eye.

But scientists have discovered in recent decades that many animals – including human beings – do have specialized light-detecting molecules in unexpected places, outside of the eyes. These “extraocular photoreceptors” are usually found in the central nervous system or in the skin, but also frequently in internal organs. What are light-sensing molecules doing in places beyond the eyes?

The opsin protein is able to detect light from light sensitive molecules. This protein is found in various parts of the body. The most obvious examples are with the octopus and cuttlefish that can change their color. This process is used by some species to detect the earth's magnetic field, as well.

Generally, they regulate light-mediated behavior that exists below the level of consciousness and that doesn’t require having an extremely precise knowledge of a light source’s location in space or time. Typical functions include the timing of daily cycles of alertness, sleep and wake, mood, body temperature and numerous other internal cycles that are synchronized to the changes of day and night.

Biological clocks that maintain regular physiological cycles – and cause the discomforts of jet lag – nearly always are controlled by these photoreceptors. These detectors are also important for the opening and closing of the eye’s pupil to help adjust to varying light levels. Skin photoreceptors like those in fish or octopus often control color and pattern variations.

Other studies suggest a correlation between mood and learning abilities and these receptors. This hits home with me because I know I react differently when exposed to fluorescent lights.

It seems to me that new findings about how our bodies work are coming out almost daily. Studies like this one really make you think about the incredible intricacies of our physical selves. Maybe freckles have a higher purpose!

So now perhaps we have the beginning of a mechanism for some forms of extra visual perceptions;

i.e. "light-mediated behavior that exists below the level of consciousness and that doesn’t require having an extremely precise knowledge of a light source’s location in space or time." + "providing magnetoreception, the ability to detect the Earth’s magnetic field. This capacity is based on the cryptochromes, which apparently underlie mechanisms for magnetic orientation in animals as different as birds and cockroaches."

This, if I take a long step back, sounds a lot like descriptions given by folks who are 'psychic'... which are less precise with respect to location in space and time than our eyesight (our primary sensory modality) and is perhaps based on magnetism or influenced by other forces we have yet to pinpoint, let alone understand;)

Lila you make some good points. This may be a way to explain the unexplainable.

My whole body can be like an antenna - sometimes I sense things with my whole body. I was thinking about my experience with the "out-of-towner" at the grocery store. He dropped in behind me, and I felt a clear and blue energy that was not like anything I've felt with other people. How did I sense the color blue? Maybe it was with my other receptors.

We can train ourselves as well. I remember reading something from a runner that commented that while we run we must train ourselves to see with our ears to avoid accidents. I stared to apply such concept while running and I reached the point where I could sense something nearby (vehicle, people, animal) without actually see it -I did attribute it to just "hearing" sometimes. Never had an accident while running even though I had my mind engaged many times trying to solve professional issues while doing so, and left either my hearing or extra senses to alert me about something unusual/unexpected.

I believe there are all kinds of seeing. Several years ago, in a meditation, I heard "Close your eyes", which confused me because my eyes were closed. I softened my energy and sensed another closing - maybe reliance on physical sight. When I did that I found I was "seeing" with my heart.

I think the word empath describes one who has the ability to pick up on things energetic. Not all empaths are medical empaths (although that's a handy skill, to be able to read the aura and see the live and dead spots).

Agree! Some, includes me, can just sense the feelings/emotions of a person even if they are disguised -as long as they are not relatives or somebody connected emotionally because our own feelings cloud the reading.

I use this as an example when I talk to others about sensing energies. I start with dogs because everyone I know agrees that dogs are able to figure out who is Ok and who is not. So, what senses are dogs using if they can figure this out from a distance? Then I talk about how we feel when we go into the homes of others. Sometimes, you just want to leave, right? So, where is this info coming from. As soon as I tie this subject to actual experience, I can get people to at least consider that there might be more to the idea of energies.

Carl, I have the same experience with family - in extreme circumstances, I can cue right in, but under normal conditions, there can be "interference".

Seeing and sensing with senses beyond the basic five seems to be an ability we all have, should we wish to develop it, or develop it further for those who never turned it off in youth. How far we can advance it interests me greatly.

While I've given up that it's possible for everyone to experience it (Some people truly don't believe it's possible and that firm belief most effectively is their perceived reality and no other) my own personal exploration is quite enlightening and confusing as the more I explore the more what I discover is unfathomable.
We (at least those who desire it) do seem to be Walking Antenna able to perceive more than meets the eye and other basic 5 senses. Additionally I have no reason to believe that consciousness is located in the mind, or heart or even in the auric field - it truly seems Non-local and capable of being anywhere attention goes in a millisecond depending on the persons ability to detach from the thinking mind and achieve a state of receiving information in an Observer State.

Last week, as an example, I did a Psychic Eye Surgery on a woman who had a long list of eye issues which I asked her to not tell me as I desired to go in and see what I could and correct it without the pre-mental programming of Western Medicine's machine and test results. When it was time I moved my consciousness inside and studied the eye's (both) correcting what was discovered via energy manipulation/channeling. Several things were found that there was no information in my data base on how to easily correct and so they were left 'as is' to be addressed at a later date after more research. Immediately afterwards she could see better, both shape recognition and depth of field and night vision had improved. The stigma which I'd seen and left for a later date was not improved, nor was close up detail acuteness which I'd also not chosen to not work on due to time and level of focus required on a session which was already over-long. It could be addressed later with the stigma.
The following week she went for another Eye appointment to a Western doctor and her vision had gone from a 9 to 6, which apparently means a 33% improvement. She's so happy she doesn't even want to come back for a second one to work on the stigma and close up vision and instead has a list of 9 other things in the body she wants to begin working on.

Based on this and a great many other examples my current belief is that not only is consciousness itself non local but still able to work with energy to affect physical realities, but that it doesn't need the body as its antenna in many circumstances and is capable of receiving the information and acting on it non-the-less. Note the use of the word 'current'. lol It's all subject to change with more experience.

Well, I had the experience yesterday of hearing an energetic change in process. Since the eclipse some of my old blocked energetic channels in my legs have called for more attention, with me hardly being able to hobble around my home, let alone go outside. Therefore, I've had more massages than usual to try to help with this condition. While my left foot was being worked on, the healer and I both felt an energetic shift, then there was a loud "bang" at the window, about 3-4 metres away. Nothing unusual had occurred outside or to the window. It was just the energy leaving through the most porous surface available, the glass window. Looking around, I realised it couldn't exit through the double-brick walls, so had found the least resistant exit possible in that space. It helps that I am someone who can easily suspend disbelief, when I experience something first-hand.
