The hare and the owl

Here's a bit of synchronicity. I've only ever heard of animal totems in my favourite book it's called the clan of the cave bear by jean m auel it's part of the earths children series. I never thought much about it until much later. Bear that in mind..

Last June I was in a really bad place. Id organised a family holiday and to say it was a disaster is an understatement. I was the lowest I had ever been, and that's saying something. I had taken off on my own in the night I just couldn't bear it any more. I drove for a while and ended up on this beach I was unfamiliar with. I sat by the sea on a rock, I was just wallowing in the darkness I felt.I just wanted to end it all, It seemed like the only way to make the pain stop. An odd thump thumping started to permeate my thoughts, getting louder and louder, closer and closer. I squint into the darkness and see the biggest hare I had ever seen in my life bounding straight towords me. He was huge! at first I thought it was some sort of kangaroo (in Scotland lol) He stops just out of arms reach I could almost touch him had I not been frozen to the spot. He stops and stares at me for what feels like an eternity.boring straight into my very soul. In this moment I feel his presence and a feeling of calmness and reassurance washes over me. As quickly as he appears he turns and bounds off right back the way he came, back into the darkness.

This moment proved to be a catalyst for my development. This is the moment my life changed forever. I knew I couldn't go back to this dark place, he snapped me straight out of it. It's like he carried the darkness away for me. Clean slate. It was the start of a new chapter for me. The next day I caught by chance an article on 'being an empath' and all the pieces started to slide into place.

It has since been revealed to me by a good friend of mine I have In fact another animal totem too, the owl. I knew straight away once I read up on it how fitting it all was. Makes sense, hare and owl, predator and prey, I am my own worst enemy for sure. When I began to think i had lost my owl totem, the next day I was honoured with a beautiful song from an owl at night, something id never experienced before.

It's funny, id read the book I mentioned above about 20 times in my life and once I read it again with open eyes I was blown away by all the synchronicities. It's like the answers and guidance had been there all along, pointing the way.

I feel comfortable speaking about the darkness I felt at the time only because I am now out the other side and in a really good place. I'm glad I've experienced all that I have in my lifetime as I now know how brilliant the light is by comparison.

I can't make sense of my 'human' guides but my animals guide me every day :)

I get a lot of animal and bird visitors and understand the power of one appearing right in front of you. There are some websites with info about meanings, but I've found that understanding more about the characteristics of the visitors is most helpful. Rabbits and hares do not come close to something they perceive as a danger, so to have one visit you is special. Also, they are alert and able to avoid trouble, which seems an appropriate message to you for that visit.

When I was a kid I used to have a reacurring dream of tigers. Your hare encounter made me remember a dream of many hares. I now realize both dreams had many animals in family packs and both where about protecting and making decisions. I will look it up now. For some reason I always thought my totem would be a cow or pidgeon but maybe I'm just trying to be average

Cool experience, and (in my mind at least) another nod toward the possibility that 'something' about reality is intelligently observing us, occasionally reflecting our mental state back to us, offering up a titbit of insight when we most need it or happen to be on the right track somehow.

As an aside, I've always felt a strange affinity for crows and ravens. I recently discovered (last summer) that the crow/raven is my totem animal. That was definitely intriguing to me as I've always been drawn to them in some way that seems almost mystical - as daft as that sounds. It extends to magpies, too (same family). They tend to show up when I'm heading in the right direction, or when I need some support and reassurance.

I've also got something weird going on with owls at the moment, too - but that's a further, unnecessary deviation.

    Thanks for sharing :)

Nothing daft or weird at all about it, AD! It just sounds to me like you're getting in touch with your own "Inner Guidance System"! :D

I once had a beloved cat called Ravensthorpe. But the name was always shortened off to Raven. He was a Russian Blue. People would say: "Well, he's not black...?"
