Earth Hour first started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, back in 2007 — I was there and participated. Since that day, it's grown to engage more than 180 countries and territories around the world. Earth Hour 2018 is on the 24th of March 2018, at 8:30 pm local time; this means your time in your area, not a set time you have to work out based on another area.

So what is it? It's organised by WWF, which is the World Wide Fund for Nature (https://www.worldwildlife.org/). It's held once a year, encouraging individuals, businesses and communities to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour. It can be looked at as a symbol of commitment to the planet, so it's really about being a symbolic event — the idea and intention of trying to make a difference — not so much about the reduction of our ecological footprint. It does encourage us all to think about our impact on the health of the planet..

The event acts as a trigger to find alternative ways of energy sourcing which don't impact the environment negatively, as well as work out real solutions to other environmental challenges.

It's pretty easy for us to turn off what we don't need to use, and light a candle, or use a flashlight if we need to. We can read a book, go outside and star gaze, actually talk to people in person, plus so much more.

Earth Hour Events

If you are planning a large event, the Earth Hour site lets you mark it down and also view the events others have planned, check this link here.

Connect2Earth

Above is an introduction video to the connect 2 earth site, where you can sign up and share your thoughts and experiences with earth hour, what all of this means to you, but also what you and others are doing to make a difference.

Here are some of the stories that those on connect 2 earth have shared: https://www.earthhour.org/stories

I encourage all of you to take part at 8:30 p.m. on the 24th and provide some feedback on this thread with what you get up to during that hour. Let's join together and act as our own individual catalysts for change!

In four minutes the lights go off here in my timezone!

I wonder how everyone has, and will be, spending their Earth Hour?

I seem to have started out with a book in my hand but that didn't last. I'm just glad I didn't drool I don't think:oops:)
I guess that works too, when the lights are out.

I missed it this year, due to numerous factors, but I support the idea, and well done, any of you who did participate.
